In a small Russian provincial town at the end of the nineteenth century, postmaster Vasily Ivanovich tells a group of young men about his earlier service at a metropolitan post office. Mysterious poste restante letters and their secretive recipients awaken his curiosity. The story explores love, trust, marital fidelity, and the fragile boundary beyond which the desire to uncover another person’s secret can destroy one’s peace of mind.
