Their New Stopover

Author: Narek Topuzyan (1)

Reader: Narek Topuzyan (1)

Category: Tale (371)

Age Recommendation: 16+

The story is a chain of retrospective parallels, where the mature, experienced author of the present attempts to understand the past and the nature of his emotions through his younger self left behind in time, from a cognitive height. The journey takes him to a point in the past, from which an eternal rupture with the dearest figures of his childhood—his grandmother and grandfather—is about to begin. There, encountering the reality of loss with emotions incomprehensible to his childish consciousness, the author gradually moves toward the present.

In the author’s present, a landslide—originating from the Garni region, descending through the mountains and valleys, erasing all human conventions in its path—is about to reach the seemingly eternal resting place of his grandparents, the holiest of conventions: the grave. It threatens to bring their remains to the surface. At this point, through his father, the author must make a difficult decision: to exhume his grandmother’s and grandfather’s remains and relocate them to a safer place—to their new eternal, earthly resting place. In the process, he poses a rhetorical question: decades after their separation, did they—his grandmother and grandfather—truly exist at all?
