“David Bek” is a historical novel by Raffi, consisting of three books and an epilogue. Davit Bek was a prominent 18th-century figure, an Armenian military commander and the leader of the liberation movement of Syunik against Iranian khans and Turkish conquerors. In the 1720s, Armenian liberation movements experienced a new rise and entered a phase of armed struggle. In 1722, on behalf of the elders of Kapan, Stepanos Shahumyan appealed to the Georgian King Vakhtang VI, requesting that one of the distinguished Armenian commanders serving in his army be sent to Syunik to lead the people’s armed movement. At the end of 1722, Davit Bek, together with a group of Armenian soldiers, was sent from Georgia to Syunik. Upon returning to his homeland, he took part in liberation struggles directed against Persian and Turkish forces.
