At the beginning of the twentieth century, among Armenian immigrants in America, Kotosh Chali and his compatriots seek to overcome loneliness and start families. Letters from their homeland, matchmaking efforts, and the hope of beginning a new life mingle with everyday worries and personal interests. Through everyday speech and details of domestic life, the author portrays the immigrants’ customs, their trust and distrust of one another, and the relationships that take shape around marriage.
