In early twentieth-century Kharberd, the life of Israel, a craftsman, revolves around tailoring, drinking, and complicated relationships with his family. While his wife and children take part in the life of their religious community, Israel remains set in his own habits and convictions. After moving to America, he begins a new life with his old friend Zakar. The story explores estrangement within the family, conflicts over faith, and the bonds that take shape over the years in a person's life.
