In the early 1920s, after the First World War, the narrator travels with his daughter across the Mediterranean from Smyrna to Egypt, later continuing through Italy toward America. Along the way, he observes different peoples, customs, everyday life, and the contrasts between East and West. A central thread follows the young Lamiyé, whose love for an Italian Christian comes into conflict with family expectations and religious restrictions.
