Set in late nineteenth-century Tiflis, the stories follow educated and prosperous townspeople whose conversations, disputes, and chance encounters reveal their beliefs, ambitions, and weaknesses. Segbosyan, Marjanyan, Mastakyan, and others become involved in situations that raise questions about public duty and private interest, love and jealousy, self-deception, vanity, and the influence women may have on men’s choices.
