Mkrtich Armen's "The Letter" depicts the harsh life of Danil Yenikeyev, who suffers from constant hunger and theft in the camp until he receives a letter from his family. Although the letter contains personal news (a new grandchild, a daughter's wedding), the deepest impact on Danil is the news of his family's prosperity and their stock of "two tons of potatoes". This information instantly transforms the prisoner's psychological state, causing him to overcome his hunger and regain his lost sense of dignity.
