19th-century life on a provincial Russian estate brings together the landowner Gribov, his acquaintance Otsov and the English governess Miss Tfais. An episode unfolding on the riverbank lays bare their differing customs and the difficulty of understanding one another. The author humorously examines the distrust of foreigners, rudeness and complacency, turning an everyday situation into a subtle, comical portrait of human behavior.
