The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin is a science fiction novel by the noted Russian author Alexey Nikolayevich Tolstoy written in 1926–1927. Vladimir Nabokov considered it Tolstoy's finest fictional work. In mid-1920s Russian inventor Pyotr Garin creates a powerful "Death Ray" device, called "Hyperboloid". He uses his invention as both the weapon and the tool to extract the gold from Earth's mantle. Using these advantages, Garin plans to establish his power all over the world.
The 1965 movie is the first screen adaptation of the novel; in 1973 a second screen version appeared.
