In nineteenth-century Paris, in an apartment on Rue Dunot, Auguste Dupin and his friend hear of a sensitive state matter that has baffled the police. A letter missing from the royal apartments becomes the focus of an intellectual contest and a test of observation. The story explores logic, insight, and the different ways people search for what is concealed, setting Dupin’s approach beside that of the Paris police.
