In early twentieth-century France, Madame Angélier leads a comfortable life, surrounded by jewelry and gifts from her husband, François. Yet this outward splendor does not dispel her inner unease. A simple childhood memory prompts her to reflect on the passing years and the changes in herself. The story contrasts material wealth with the rich world that a child's imagination sometimes creates.
