At the heart of the story is deaf-mute caretaker Gerasim — a strong, hardworking and silent serf, who was brought from the countryside to Moscow. Gerasim’s life is filled with loneliness and hardship: his mistress, a capricious and power-hungry landowner, marries off his beloved washerwoman Tatyana, to whom he was not indifferent.
